6 Tips for Staying Safe During Heavy Rain in Korea
The rainy season has arrived. With forecasts predicting heavier rainfall than last year, it’s important to stay prepared. The seasonal rain front has already moved south of Jeju Island but is expected to return northward next week, bringing more downpours. Even after the rainy season officially ends, localized torrential rains can still occur—often striking without much warning. In recent years, severe flash floods have hit certain areas, including Seoul’s Gangnam district, when intense rain fell in a short period of time. Here are six important tips to help you stay safe and minimize risks during periods of heavy rain in Korea. 1. Stay Updated on Weather Conditions Check the radio, TV, internet, or your smartphone’s weather app regularly. Knowing when and where heavy rain will hit gives you time to prepare. English radio stations: • FM 101.3 – Seoul • FM 90.5 – Busan • FM 98.7 – Gwangju • FM 88.7 – Jeju 2. Protect Your Electronics Unplug home appliances that aren’t in use. Power surges caused by lightning strikes can damage electronics—even if they’re switched off. 3. Maintain Drains and Gutters Clear debris, leaves, and blockages from drains and gutters so water can flow freely. Clogged drainage increases the risk of leaks and flooding inside your home. 4. Avoid Flooded Roads If possible, stay indoors. If you must go out, avoid walking or driving through submerged areas. Floodwater may hide live electrical wires, sharp objects, or potholes. Driving tip: Never attempt to drive if water is higher than half your tire. Flooding can damage your engine. If your car has been submerged—especially in an underground parking lot—do not start the engine. 5. Be Extra Careful Near Rivers and Valleys When enjoying outdoor activities near rivers, valleys, or streams, check the weather forecast frequently. Sudden localized rain can drop 70–100 mm in just one hour, making it easy to become trapped or stranded. 6. Avoid Direct Contact with Floodwater Floodwater is contaminated with dirt, garbage, and bacteria, which can cause skin infections. If you must enter it, wear rubber boots or waterproof clothing to protect yourself. Stay alert, stay safe, and let’s all get through the rainy season together—so we can enjoy Korea’s sunny beaches once the clouds clear.
