When an expatriate is assigned to a Korean subsidiary or affiliated entity, they are typically eligible for a D-8 visa. If the assignee’s family accompanies them, the spouse and children are eligible for an F-3 dependent visa.
Until recently, the Korean immigration office accepted copies of the marriage certificate (for a spouse) and the birth certificate (for children) to establish family relationships. However, as of April 2025, immigration authorities have strengthened the requirements. Applicants must now submit original apostilled documents rather than simple copies.
This change has created unexpected challenges and confusion for companies transferring expatriates from their headquarters to Korea.
Document Requirements:
Before April 2025:
- Copy of marriage certificate accepted
- Copy of birth certificate accepted
- Original apostilled marriage certificate required
- Original apostilled birth certificate required
